What to Expect in Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Whether you're experiencing pelvic floor symptoms, recovering from childbirth, or simply want to feel strong and confident in your body again, you're in the right place. At Steph Lyons Physio, I offer compassionate, expert care tailored to your needs.

Before Your First Appointment

After booking your appointment, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details you need. This includes:

- An overview of your appointment and what to expect

- Directions and access information for the clinic

- Guidance on preparing for a virtual appointment if you are attending online

- Guidance on preparing for a home visit appointment

- Information about clinic facilities

- A link to complete your patient intake form online (this may arrive via a separate email)

- A PDF attachment titled “New Patient Information Pack”

Your next steps at this point will be to complete the patient intake form and read through the New Patient Information Pack to help you feel confident and prepared for your first appointment.

Your First Appointment

Your initial session is usually 60 minutes and includes:

- A full discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and goals

- A question-based assessment to understand your pelvic health concerns

- A movement or physical assessment appropriate to your symptoms (this may be guided virtually or performed in clinic/home visit)

- A detailed explanation of the pelvic floor and discussion about internal assessment if appropriate and with your full consent

- A collaborative treatment plan based on your needs

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on, what you can do about it, and what support is available.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up sessions (typically 45 minutes) may include:

- Optional internal pelvic floor examination during in-clinic appointments (with your full consent and only if appropriate)

- Movement assessment to review how your body is responding to treatment (guided virtually or assessed in clinic/ home visit)

- Hands-on treatment where appropriate during in-clinic or home visit appointments

- Exercise progression or movement rehabilitation

- Nervous system regulation strategies

- Lifestyle, bladder, or bowel education

- Ongoing goal setting and accountability

You’ll always know what we’re working on and why.

What to Wear & Bring

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in (leggings or shorts are ideal). This helps if we need to look at movement or guide exercises during your session.

For virtual appointments, try to set up your camera in a space where you can stand and move comfortably if needed.

Bring any relevant scans or referral letters if you have them, but they’re not required.

Bringing your own water bottle is recommended. Tap water is available at the clinic if needed.

Considerations for Home Visits

Home visits follow the same assessment and treatment process as clinic appointments, but take place in your own home.

During your appointment, we will discuss your symptoms, medical history and goals before carrying out any appropriate assessment and treatment. This may include movement assessment, exercise prescription and, where clinically appropriate and with your consent, a pelvic floor examination.

Please ensure there is a quiet, private space available for the consultation and enough room for any assessment or exercise that may be required.

For some physiotherapy assessments and pelvic floor examinations, it may be necessary to lie fully flat. If possible, please ensure access to a bed, sofa or similar surface that is long enough for you to lie comfortably.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily if movement assessment or exercise is required.

Location & Availability

Appointments take place either in a calm, private clinic space at The Alvon Clinic, near Sherborne, virtually via a secure video platform, or as a home visit in the comfort of your own home.

Please view my online booking calendar for current appointment availability. Please note that home visits are not available to book online, please complete the Request Appointment form here.

Nervous? You’re Not Alone

Pelvic health is deeply personal. Many clients feel nervous at first — that’s completely normal. Everything I do is based on consent, choice, and working at your pace. You will be heard, supported, and never rushed.
